Art, Creativity, and AI – Class Discussion Guide

Erin’s opening thoughts: This semester, we’ve created a foundation of knowledge around AI systems and their infrastructures as reductions. These probabilistic networks of statistical homogeneity are not artificial and not intelligent. As Kate Crawford puts it, there’s two pillars of mythology at work in AI discourse: I think these two pieces offer a compelling framework for artwork and creativity within AI systems. For one, we’ve spoken at length about the dangers of anthropomorphizing these systems, as it’s essentially a scam, not-to-mention a tried and true marketing strategy for these tools. For our discussion around creativity, I’m especially interested in the second piece. This speaks to our recent discussions of meaning-making…

Writing and AI (AI Policy Examples)

Hey everyone! Anna and I are excited to speak to you all about AI and Writing! We wanted to spend some time talking about AI policies and writing courses as part of the icebreaker portion of our presentation. We will share another blog post later this evening (or tomorrow morning) with the questions for the assigned readings. Our goal is to place ourselves in the eyes of both the student and the instructor to see how AI is viewed in the classroom. Anna and I previously worked as writing instructors…

Hey Folks, hope everyone had a great extended time off from our class! Next week we are taking a look at AI and the impacts on education. Natalia and I put together a few questions that we’d like to share in advance for everyone to consider. We are also expecting a guest speaker to join us and would love to hear their thoughts on a lot of these issues. Going through this questions should take no longer than an hour of the class which should leave additional room to discuss other things the guest speaker may want to share. Excited to get everyone’s thoughts in our next upcoming class. Burke,…

Thank you,Hyojin and Lini Bender, Emily M., et al. “On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big?.” Excerpt 1 “When we perform risk/benefit analyses of language technology, we must keep in mind how the…

Jonathan and I have an opinionated approach on the structure for our class conversation tomorrow, and so wanted to get these thoughts posted before class to give y’all a chance to review! If some ideas or concepts come up in the warm-up exercise that we haven’t explicitly gestured to with our prepared questions, we will do our best to make sign posts to address them under their specific readings. Proposed Outline, pull quotes, and discussion questions:
